Night Quote Analysis Chapter 5-6

"Don't let yourself be fooled with illusions. Hitler has made it very clear that he will annihilate all the Jews before the clock strikes twelve, before they can hear the last stroke." (Wiesel 86)

In this quote Ellie's hospital roommate tells him to don't believe that the Red Army is almost here. This says that the roommate has lost hope and is expecting to die. The quote also gives us an example of Hitler's cruelty. To tell people that you will "annihilate" them is very harsh. Due to this revelation, prisoners don't know if to believe the prophecies of the Red army arriving or to just give up hope like everyone else.

"I've got more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He's the only one who's kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people." (Wiesel 87)

This quote shows us a big contradiction. Ellie's hospital roommate is telling us that he trusts Hitler but due to the situation he doesn't at the same time. Hitler has done every cruel thing that he said he was going to do. Close friends, family, even leaders have told lies. So this quote is stating that the lies don't help in these situations. This then lets the prisoner know that Hitler is the only one that has kept his word about everything.
